An Inquisitive Perspective on Modals and Quantifiers

    Get PDF
Inquisitive semantics enriches the standard truth-conditional notion of meaning, in order to facilitate an integrated semantic analysis of statements and questions. Taking this richer view on meaning as a starting point, this review presents a new perspective on modal operators and quantifiers, one that has the potential to address a number of challenges for standard semantic analyses of such operators. To illustrate the new perspective, we present an inquisitive take on the semantics of attitude verbs and on quantifiers taking scope out of questions

On the semantics and logic of declaratives and interrogatives

In many natural languages, there are clear syntactic and/or intonational differences between declarative sentences, which are primarily used to provide information, and interrogative sentences, which are primarily used to request information. Most logical frameworks restrict their attention to the former. Those that are concerned with both usually assume a logical language that makes a clear syntactic distinction between declaratives and interrogatives, and usually assign different types of semantic values to these two types of sentences. A different approach has been taken in recent work on inquisitive semantics. This approach does not take the basic syntactic distinction between declaratives and interrogatives as its starting point, but rather a new notion of meaning that captures both informative and inquisitive content in an integrated way. The standard way to treat the logical connectives in this approach is to associate them with the basic algebraic operations on these new types of meanings. For instance, conjunction and disjunction are treated as meet and join operators, just as in classical logic. This gives rise to a hybrid system, where sentences can be both informative and inquisitive at the same time, and there is no clearcut division between declaratives and interrogatives. It may seem that these two general approaches in the existing literature are quite incompatible. The main aim of this paper is to show that this is not the case. We develop an inquisitive semantics for a logical language that has a clearcut division between declaratives and interrogatives. We show that this language coincides in expressive power with the hybrid language that is standardly assumed in inquisitive semantics, we establish a sound and complete axiomatization for the associated logic, and we consider a natural enrichment of the system with presuppositional interrogatives

Effect of the dispersion of the chromophore on the optical performances of polarizers from polyethylene and 5”-thio-(3-butyl)nonyl-2,2’:5’,2”-terthiophene

A new polyethylene-compatible terthiophene chromophore, 5"-thio-(3-butyl) nonyl-2,2':5',2"-terthiophene, with melting point lower than 0degreesC was prepared and used for linear polarizers based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy indicate that the new chromophore is dispersed uniformly in films of UHMWPE obtained by casting from solution. The films show excellent dichroic properties (dichroic ratio 30) at rather low drawing ratio (approximate to20). Moreover, qualitative agreement is observed with the Ward pseudo-affine deformation schem

Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) films containing perylene dyes as stress-strain luminescent indicators

    Get PDF
Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) films containing different concentrations of perylene (P) chromophores have been prepared by solution-casting and compression-moulding. The light emission features of the films depend on P concentration and polymer films deformation. A well-defined band attributed to the formation of micro/ nano-structured perylene chromophoric aggregates is observed with more than 0.1 wt.% of P in the film. The occurrence of this phenomenon changed the emission colour of the films from a bright blue (non- interacting dyes) to low intense pale yellow (interacting dyes) colour. During film drawing the LLDPE macromolecules reorganization is able to break the P supramolecular organization, leading to the prevalence of the blue emission of monomeric P. The optical behaviour of perylene dyes acting as internal stress- strain luminescent indicators for polyethylene films, provides a powerful tool to detect macromolecular organization

Listeria monocytogenes contamination of Tenebrio molitor larvae rearing substrate: Preliminary evaluations

Today, edible insects represent a hot topic as an emerging and eco-friendly source of protein. The mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) is among the most employed insects for human consumption and feed purposes. So far Listeria monocytogenes, have never been detected either in products sold on the market or during the rearing process. In this study, the substrate employed for mealworm rearing was deliberately contaminated with L. monocytogenes and the bacterium was enumerated during the rearing period and after technological treatments of the larvae. L. monocytogenes persisted during the rearing period. Washing the larvae did not produce any significant effect, while fasting the larvae for 24 or 48 h reduced the L. monocytogenes load (P < 0.001). Oven cooking eliminated L. monocytogenes cells from the product, reducing the risk associated to this foodborne pathogen to zero
